Types of Seizures

Seizures result when the human brain is overloaded with electrical signals. This abnormal increase in brain activity can result in moments of confusion, unresponsiveness, involuntary body movement, or fainting, often accompanied by convulsions. Seizures vary in terms of both severity and frequency, with some seizures being relatively violent, while others are the complete opposite.

Seizures can be categorized into two groups: partial and generalized. Partial seizures occur when only one part of the brain is affected. That is, partial seizures begin in one area of the brain, and are typically caused by specific traumatic events, such as a head injury, or the presence of foreign stresses, such as tumors or brain infection. Generally speaking, the results from a partial seizure are less severe than a generalized seizure, which results when both sides of the brain are negatively affected by abnormal electrical signal activity. As opposed to partial seizures, generalized seizures tend to be more closely connected to hereditary factors. Furthermore, there are also non-epileptic seizures (behavioral shifts not caused by an overload of electrical signals) and status epileptic seizures (prolonged seizures that do not dissipate even after a few minutes).

Partial seizures may be labeled as:

  • Simple partial seizures, which do not involve a loss in consciousness, but do involve jerking movements and a loss of sensation
  • Complex partial seizures, in which consciousness is either lost or somewhat impaired, and are generally categorized by bouts of amnesia followed by confusion

Generalized seizures may be labeled as:

  • Absence seizures, which typically last no more than 15 seconds and involve little confusion or other symptoms after the seizure commences
  • Tonic-clonic seizures, which last one to two minutes and involve not only confusion, but a sense of amnesia and tendencies to fall into a deep sleep afterwards
  • Myoclonic seizures, which are generally characterized by muscle contractions that occur in both sides of the body at the same time
  • Atonic seizures, which are generally resistant to drug therapy and involve a sudden drop in muscle tone which could result in loss of posture or collapse
