Switching to Generic Keppra

Keppra is an anti-seizure medication that is prescribed to individuals who suffer from epilepsy. When such seizures occur, electrical signals in the brain are transmitted at an elevated rate, sometimes as high as four times the rate that the average brain. These rapid moving signals cause portions of the brain or the entire brain to momentarily short circuit. Keppra helps slow down these electrical signals, thus attempting to prevent the onset of seizures. However, there are a host of factors that can affect the wellbeing of an individual using Keppra, particularly if the individual is forced to switch from Keppra to a generic substitute.

Generic forms of Keppra are supposed to be the bioequivalent of the drug. However, as mandated by the Food and Drug Administration, a bioequivalent is allowed up to a 20% deviation away from the original product. Therefore, while the active ingredient in Keppra and generic substitutes may be the same, the inactive ingredients need not be. The difference in ingredients can mean the difference between positive and negative results, particularly if a patient happens to have an aversion to one of the ingredients.

Switching to generic Keppra has been known to actually cause breakthrough seizures and increase the severity of seizures at times. With the inactive ingredients varying from one company to the next, the binding agents within the medications are also different, which explains why a generic substitute may work in one person's favor, and entirely against another. Switching from Keppra to a generic substitute may be more cost effective, but it isn't always in the best interest of the patient. While side effects are supposed to be the same regardless of whether or not a medication is brand name or generic, the severity of those side effects can be considerably altered depending on the inactive ingredients used.
